With a 30 year history at Piccolo Spoleto, the sundown poetry series has been delighting the literati for decades. Set in what organizer Susan Meyers calls an “enchanting and intimate space,” the series combines the setting sun with poetry in Dock St. Theatre’s courtyard. A reception at the Courtyard Art Gallery will follow, giving attendees the chance to buy books and mingle with the poet himself. There are eight poets presenting this year, including Quitman Marshall, a Columbia, S.C.-born poet who now resides in Beaufort. Meyers says that the series seeks to highlight local (and not-so local — this year John Repp will travel from Pennsylvania) poets with recently published books. Marshall just published his book You Were Born One Time, which won the 2013 S.C. Poetry Archives Book Prize. Meyers says that Marshall’s brand of poetry is both graceful and charged with emotion. Continue your literary fix this week with Kendra Hamilton’s sundown reading on Tues. June 2.
