Italian chef and BBC cooking show host Carmelita Caruana will be in Charleston for the next week, hosting events to benefit Louie's Kids, a nonprofit organization aimed at teaching obese children to make better lifestyle choices. There are several chances to get in on the action, beginning on Wed. Aug. 8 with a reception at High Cotton. On Sun. Aug. 12 Carmelita and Chef John Marshall host a "Sunday Supper — Italian Style," at Al di La in West Ashley. Other events include a Slow Food luncheon with Chef Mike Lata at FIG on Wed. Aug. 15, and a cooking class at Charleston Cooks! and an educational supper club meeting at the Square Onion in I'On on Thurs. Aug. 16. Each event has a minimum donation, ranging from $45 to $90. The chefs of Maverick Southern Kitchens — Frank Lee of SNOB, Anthony Gray of High Cotton, Tim Armstrong of Old Village Post House, and Danielle Wecksler of Charleston Cooks! — will host a reception for Italian chef Carmelita Caruana to kick off her series of fund-raisers for Louie's Kids.
