Teddy Bear Picnic

When: Sun., March 10, 1-3:30 p.m. 2013

Just when you think there’s nowhere to find teddy bear hip-hop lessons, the Charleston Parks Conservancy comes to the rescue with the Teddy Bear Picnic. Kids can rotate through a dozen activity booths, including cookie decorating, crown making, and the popular Teddy Bear Care Station, which staffs nurses certified in treating injured bears, whether they’ve got a sore paw or bumped nose. They’ve also added a Bearodontist, who will provide dental examinations and teach kids and their bears about good dental hygiene. John Cusatis will provide live musical entertainment. “He does a really fun, interactive show,” says Neves Richards, Charleston Parks Conservancy’s volunteer director. “He brings instruments and invites kids to play them and be a part of the band.” Homespun Hoops and Peace, Love, and Hip-hop will offer hula-hooping contests and dance lessons for kids and bears. Families are welcome to bring their own picnics or purchase food from Jack’s Cosmic Dogs, which will be on site. The day wraps up with the grand finale Teddy Bear Parade. “The goal is to get kids out to connect with each other and the outdoors,” Richards says. “Hopefully kids will feel connected to the park by making memories there.”
