The 5 Browns

When: Sat., Oct. 2, 7 p.m. 2010

Remember Hanson? And how it was kind of cool that they were brothers? And I guess today’s generation has the Jonas Brothers, who are way more obvious with the fact that they’re related by including the word “brothers” in their official band name. Well, the 5 Browns are the classical music world’s answer to the Jonases. But instead of Nick, Joe, and Kevin, you’ve got Ryan, Melody, Gregory, Deondra, and Desirae; this piano quintet will kick off the Charleston Concert Association’s 75th season. The siblings were the first five to ever be simultaneously accepted to Juilliard, and they’ve appeared on 60 Minutes, Oprah, and their own PBS special. The Browns will perform a program of classical standards, like Gustav Holst’s The Planets and Johannes Brahms’ Sonata in F Minor, to more modern numbers, like a Hitchcock Movie Suite and John Williams’ Star Wars: Suite for Five Pianos. We’d like to see Taylor Hanson (you know, the keyboard-playing one) try that. —Susan Cohen
