Many Charlestonians who enjoyed a hot, preppie youth on and around the CofC campus in the late ’80s and early ’90s fondly remember local band the Archetypes. Fronted by cheerful, goofy vocalist Tommy Dew, the band was a big deal in town back in the day, playing a jangly, melodic style of Southern-fried pop-rock at frat parties, local clubs, and music festivals. Dew currently works as a businessman and tour guide. In 2009, he reunited with guitarists Kevin Wadley and Joey Allawos (both original members of the Archetypes) and a few guest players for a set at the annual Suzy McGrane Memorial at the Charleston Harbor Resort. Musically and personally, things clicked on stage, so the fellas decided to stick with it, playing occasional club and festival shows through 2010 and this year. They share the bill at the Windjammer with Honor By August, a pop-rock quartet from northern Virginia. Expect slew of Archetypes classics and renditions of vintage college radio faves.
