The AS-IS Ensemble w/ Kellin Watson

When: Sun., July 25 2010

Even those of you who don’t consider yourselves to be jazz fans may get caught up in the music of N.C.’s Michael Bellar & AS-IS. Bellar, a classically trained pianist is the founder and composer of the modern jazz group, who released their first album in 1998. With drummer Brad Wentworth and bassist Robert “Johnson” Jost, Bellar creates ear-grabbing music. There is an impressive range of musical influences within the group’s sound, which constantly transforms with changes in tempo and mood. The group’s pieces easily flow from spirited and foot-tap inducing grooves to calmer, slower-moving passages in just seconds. The band is currently touring in support of their most recent album, Turned On Turned Up. They perform in Charleston on July 27 at Eye Level Art with Asheville-based artist Kellin Watson. —Kelly Smith
