Cold Beer & Fiery Blues

Bartenders raced to keep up with the demand for cold PBR, Bud, and Miller Lite while roaring throngs of blues fans — young and old — crowded Fiery Ron's Home Team BBQ on Sunday. The Lowcountry Blues Bash's All-Star Blues Jam & Oyster Roast kicked off early in the afternoon and quickly escalated into a full-on beer bash and dance party, as festival musicians mingled with locals. Through the late afternoon, a rotation of cool local musicians stood elbow-to-elbow on the corner stage while booking guy Tony McKie manned the sound gear. Drummer John Picard, bassist/keybardist Whitt Algar, and keyboardist Jon Hager stood in as the main backing rhythm section while guitarists Tommy Thunderfoot, Jeff Norwood, Dr. Rev. Johnny Mac, "Stone Cold" Sarah Cole (pictured), and others took turns on the riffs and solos. At times, the line of extra sax, harmonica, and horn players traipsed off the stage and into the crowd. Elderly singer/guitarist Drink Small — a midstate S.C. boogie man who's "still trying to survive after 75" — had the crowd jiving and laughing with a lengthy set of standards and originals (heartfelt and/or bawdy) by the evening's end.
