The Hot Seats, Weigh Station

When: Sun., July 18 2010

Self-proclaimed “absurdist string band” The Hot Seats bring their fiery set of ragtime, bluegrass, old-time, and roots music to the Pour House deck for a free show on Sunday at 6 p.m. Formerly known as Special Ed & The Short Bus, the Richmond, Va.,-based group is comprised of multitalented string players and vocalists Josh Bearman, Ed Brogan, Jake Sellers, Ben Belcher, and Graham DeZarn. Their Americana/roots music is steeped in traditional styles — and they often fiddle, strum, and pick from a pile of old standards — but they add healthy dashes of vaudevillian wit, Spike Jones-styled sarcasm, and Appalachian tomfoolery to their own tunes, creating new humor from antique notions. Their latest disc is titled Retreat to Camp Candy Temptation Island. —T. Ballard Lesemann
