Starting out in Charleston can be difficult for anyone — but imagine if you had to live up to the name of one of the longest-serving mayors in U.S. history? Meet Joe Riley. No, not that Joe Riley. Let us explain.
- Jonathan Boncek
- Meet Joe.
The strapping young lad you see before you came to Charleston by way of a City Paper internship. He shares the same name with Joseph P. Riley Jr., who served as mayor of Charleston from 1975-2016. You can imagine the mix of surprise, glee, and confusion that settled over the office when we realized we might be getting our very own Joe Riley. Sadly, it was only for the summer, but in that time, Little Joe, as we lovingly referred to him, was able to experience all that Charleston has to offer. Riley even had the opportunity to introduce himself to the former mayor for a meeting that was probably much more entertaining to everyone else than it was for the two Joes.
So as we do every year when a fresh crop of students arrive — most with boring names not burdened by political legacies — the City Paper has enlisted the help of our dedicated interns to put together a helpful guide on the ins and outs of Charleston. Because as the old adage goes — Joe knows.
