Thursday night proved a feat of endurance as special event upon special event took place across the peninsula. Johnson & Wales held a reception at Cypress restaurant to commemorate the closing of its Charleston campus. The event was hosted by Tyler Florence, who announced a $15,000 renewable scholarship for an area high school senior toward tuition at J&W.
Down the street, the Have Nots! hosted "Give Us a Lift," a benefit to raise funds for the theatre's wheelchair lift. If you missed this worthy event, don't fret. You can still sponsor a seat adorned with an engraved plaque featuring text of your choice (e-mail them for info: email@example.com).
Crisis Ministries' annual food*shelter*hope fundraiser rounded out Thursday evening with a festive gathering beneath the tents at Lowndes Grove Plantation that raised money for its efforts to eradicate homelessness.
An overwhelming crowd, as in it was impossible to move, turned out for the Saturday night Ballpark Festival of Beers at the Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park. Sunday marked one of my personal favorites, the annual Blessing of the Fleet at Alhambra Hall in the Old Village of Mt. Pleasant. The glorious weather set a picture-perfect backdrop for the procession of festively decorated shrimp boats, the shrimp-eating and shagging contests, the arts and crafts village, the live beach music, and the thousands who turned out to enjoy the afternoon. Here's to a safe and prosperous shrimping season.
