The Water Ball

When: Fri., May 17, 7-11 p.m. 2013

Charleston’s a water town. We’re surrounded by rivers, marshes, and ocean, and all the amazing wildlife that calls those places home, from dolphins to alligators to seabirds. And since you’ve got to be a real curmudgeon not to recognize how lucky that makes us, we think you’ll agree that protecting our waterways is one of our most important responsibilities. But who says you can’t have fun doing it? Charleston Waterkeeper, which works to keep the Ashley/Cooper River Basin clean and healthy, is throwing its annual gala this weekend, and it’s always an impressive shindig. This year, Waterkeeper has recruited some of Charleston’s best chefs to create dishes inspired by our waterways. “The goal is for people to enjoy amazing seafood prepared by the incredible talent that exists in Charleston,” says Cyrus Buffum, Charleston Waterkeeper’s executive director. “When you connect an individual to a local body of water by a delicious dish, their motivation to protect that body of water will likely increase. That’s what we want.” There will also be meat and vegetarian dishes for those who aren’t into seafood. The Water Ball has set a goal of 100 percent waste diversion, so they’ll be recycling, composting, and using only reusable dishes. And don’t forget entertainment — Waterkeeper supporters Ben Bridwell and Creighton Barrett of Band of Horses will perform.
