Traditional Music of the Old South: Choraliers Music Club

When: Sun., May 27, 8 p.m., Fri., June 1, 8 p.m. and Sat., June 9, 8 p.m. 2012

Old-fashioned fun. If Gullah and Gershwin float your festival boat, then you'll be praising the Choraliers Music Club of Charleston. The program includes Gullah folklore, spirituals, blues, gospel, and selections from Porgy & Bess. Gullah singing from spiritual singers offers a musical history lesson.

Versatile variety show. Over 50 years old, the Club is a Piccolo and MOJA mainstay, so they know how to keep toes tapping. Crowd-pleasing portions of Porgy make the more obscure music more palatable. The varied program means that there'll be a tune to appeal to every ear.

Local heroes. This is a great chance to catch resident performers at the height of their musical powers, with an obvious passion for their work that they can't help spreading to the audience. While the show's geared toward vintage tunes, their timeless quality makes them accessible to listeners of all ages.
