Tree of Lights Lighting

When: Sat., Nov. 30, 4:30 p.m. 2013

This year the city is sticking with what works: the big man in a red suit. There’ll be no spooked giraffe threatening to charge crowds of children. But that’s OK — there’s still plenty of entertainment. There’ll be performances by the Charleston Community Band, Palmetto Bronze Handbell Ensemble, the Robert Ivey Ballet, the Village Repertory Company, and the Summerville Civic Ballet, among others. “We’re trying to give [attendees] a preview of various Charleston area theater companies,” says event coordinator Harrison Chapman. If you haven’t seen it before, Charleston has a different kind of tree than Rockefeller Plaza — it’s made of lights, so no trees will be harmed during the ceremony. The Sunday following the tree lighting officially kicks off the extended hours of the Holiday Market, which is open every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. until Dec. 21.
