When: Fri., Dec. 9, 6-9 p.m. 2011
My mom used to wear a Christmas sweater with a built-in music box, bells, bows, working Christmas tree lights, and, of course, shoulder pads. And for her more casual days, she sported a red oversized sweatshirt with a green collar that said, “Dear Santa, I want it all!” For a while there, the rest of us considered these kinds of clothes unwearable. But then, somewhere between Britney Spears and Lady Gaga, we realized we’re allowed to look a little ridiculous — especially during the holidays when we’re running around like freed zoo animals. So embrace your nerdy-mom side this week at the Ugly Christmas Sweater Party at Mad River with the Habitat Young Professionals. “There are so many formal, traditional parties throughout the holidays, so we’re hoping this will be a nice change of pace for everyone,” says Molly Coffey, communications manager for Sea Island Habitat for Humanity. “It’s going to be fun, but it’s also directly helping us build homes for local families in need.” Guests can get one free Bacardi drink of their choice from the bar, which will be manned by staff members from Habitat. Order a few (emphasis on few) Jell-O shots while you’re at it; for each one you take, Mad River donates $1 to Habitat for Humanity. Jell-O shooting for a cause — I guess it really is the most wonderful time of the year.
