Underwater Pumpkin Carving

When: Fri., Oct. 26, 3 p.m. and Wed., Oct. 31, 11 a.m. 2012

SpongeBob SquarePants would burst his bubble if he could catch this competition. Sharks, rays, and sea turtles will all be in attendance in the Great Ocean Tank as scuba divers try to carve their best jack o’ lanterns, which will later be judged by the S.C. Aquarium’s kid visitors. “It’s a fun and unique way to spend Halloween with the family,” says the Aquarium’s public relations manager, Kate Ditloff. Apparently there’s more for the divers to contend with than simply being underwater, which sounds like enough of a challenge to us. Ditloff says that the sea turtles love pumpkins and will chase the scuba divers around the tank trying to eat the prized creations. If you go on Halloween, arrive about an hour before the contest starts, because at 2 p.m. you can watch the Aquarium’s lemurs as they’re introduced to pumpkins. The gourds could become a yummy treat or a fun toy — we’re putting our money on a little of both. And if you’re an Aquarium member, sign up for the Fish or Treat event, which will let kids wander through the exhibits and get candy. It’s the perfect way to celebrate with your little mermaid, Nemo, or scary shark.
