It’s an age-old public speaking tip: imagine the audience in its underwear. But what about imagining performers in theirs? Imagine no more. The Underwear Comedy Party is coming to town. The show originated in Atlanta as the brainchild of comedian Joe Pettis, and it’s just what it sounds like: Comedians performing in their underwear. The program tours over 20 cities and recruits local comedians to perform a stripped-down comedy show. “There has never been anything like it in Charleston before,” says Theatre 99’s Brandy Sullivan, adding that the show is “a wonderful combination of hilarious, frightening, exhilarating, and bizarre.” The brave local souls wearing their skivvies include Jason Groce, Justin Thompson, David Appleton, Lily Slay, Michael Clayton, Hunter Gardner, Ryan Firster, and Andrew Rider. Theatre 99 and the Village Theatre in Atlanta, the home of Underwear Comedy Party, are comedy house friends, and Theatre 99 was happy to host. While there is no mandatory material for sets, you can probably expect jokes about nudity and undergarments.
