U.S. Women's National Soccer

When: Wed., July 22, 8 p.m. 2009

If you’re still crying over the Battery’s loss to the Houston Dynamo two weeks ago, perhaps this will lighten your mood. On Wednesday, the U.S. Women’s National team will take on Canada in an International Friendly Exhibition Game at Blackbaud Stadium.

Better leave your girls-can’t-play-soccer attitude at home, kids. These chicks are currently ranked No. 1 in the world, and they can probably kick your ass (on the field and off). In case you missed the action that went down in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the U.S. women’s team won a gold medal after beating Brazil 1-0 in overtime. Sixteen of those 2008 gold medalists are included in the roster for Wednesday’s match.

Not only does the match function as good practice for the 2011 World Cup in Germany, but it’s the final of a three-game summer series against Canada (ranked 11). “We’ve played Canada more times than any other country in the league,” says Press Officer Aaron Heifetz, “The game in Charleston will mark our 47th time.” Looks like they know what they’re up against. Let’s just hope they can come out on top and keep their winning streak at Blackbaud alive. —Nick Rosser
