Jon Banta, known as the former executive chef of 39 Rue de Jean, has just opened Vespa Pizzeria on Daniel Island with partners Tammy and Gerry Haight.
The Neopolitan pizzeria, which opened on Oct. 8, has been in the works since last December. The pizza oven, custom-made in Italy of brick and stainless steel, is a big attraction, bringing in customers who want to take pictures of it. It's the same kind that EVO has in North Charleston, but on a larger scale and cooks the pies in record time at 1400 degrees.
The menu includes fresh salads from Banta's produce garden in Moncks Corner, daily specials of pastas and meat dishes, and the main event, the pizzas. The toppings are made of the freshest ingredients sent straight from Italy: buffalo mozzarella cheese, imported tomatoes, and flour milled in Italian fresh water.
To top off your meal, Vespa has gelato, tiramisu, and the deadly delicious limoncello.
