- Kevin Kinney (Far Right) brings his band (L to R: Dave V. Johnson and Bryan Howard) back for a local benefit show
"We've spent the better part of the last five years crisscrossing the deepest, dirtiest, beautiful American South," says singer/songwriter Kevn Kinney of his latest side project. "We are here to entertain. We show up for the show and wade through a crowd as diverse as the music we're gonna play. Drifters, grifters, gonna-be's and has-beens, country folk, city folk, corkin' folk. And these folks expect music all night long – three sets ... and requests."
The Georgia-based Drivin' N' Cryin' frontman returns to Charleston with his latest group, Sun Tangled Angel Revival (a.k.a. "S.T.A.R.") The band plans to perform a special full-night benefit for the local Toys For Tots program at the Pour House on Saturday evening.
The annual Toys for Tots Program, led by the American Red Cross and the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, aims to collect new, unwrapped toys each year. The toys are distributed as holiday gifts to needy children in the community. All toys and proceeds from this show will be donated.
Kinney, bassist Bryan Howard (of Athens band Slackdaddy), and drummer Dave V. Johnson (currently of Drivin' N' Cryin'), stick with a bluesy, rootsy, red-blooded, guitar-driven sound. Frequent collaborators include a lineup of Georgia players: guitarist Gibb Droll, organist Joey Huffman, Widespread Panic bassist Dave Schools, and Adam Musick (of Athens band Southern Bitch).
S.T.A.R.'s brand-new disc – Kinney's sixth non-D'N'C album – is a twangy 11-song collection titled Comin' Round Again, released this summer on the Dutch label, Rosa. "It's one of the easiest records I ever made," says Kinney. "A lot of what I write is about how I think America is better than this. I think people always look at their own communities and countries and feel like it could always be a little better." –T. Ballard Lesemann
Kevin Kinney's S.T.A.R. perform on Sat. Dec. 23 at the Pour House (1977 Maybank Hwy., 571-4343). Cover is $10. Additionally, they ask to bring a toy to be donated to the American Red Cross and "Toys for Tots." 10 p.m. See www.kevnkinney.com and www.charlestonpourhouse.com for more.
