Welcome to the Dollhouse Fashion Show

When: Fri., June 11, 7:30 p.m. 2010

The name may remind you of a warped Todd Solondz film, but the Welcome to the Dollhouse show hosted by the Art Institute of Charleston is for fashionistas instead of film buffs. Five fashion and retail management students, led by Ashley Reid (of CFW fame), are putting on the show as a project for their event and fashion show production class. The idea arose in a class brainstorm and has been implemented by the students over 10 weeks, down to the dollhouse set they designed and built themselves. Some students, in their first runway debut, will show paper doll-inspired pieces made from the very same material. The show also features three local designers: Julie Wheat of Cavortress was influenced by Barbie and Ken; Megan Waldrep of MEW Designs is working with voodoo dolls; and Emily Bargeron of Mamie Ruth will show pieces inspired by matryoshka (or Russian nesting) dolls. “The bright colors, detailed design, and eclectic floral prints of the dolls reflect my vintage-inspired aesthetic,” Bargeron says. She’ll incorporate florals, bold prints, and bright yellow accents into her collection, draping the models in eclectic jewelry from her accessories collection, she adds. If you like what you can see, Bargeron’s collection will be available for purchase at the Holy City Artist and Fleas at Eye Level Art (which we City Picked on p. 38) on Sat. June 12. Tickets for the fashion show are $5 and benefit the school’s fashion club, Mode. —Susan Cohen
