Welcoming fall with the SEWE Soiree

Friday night was packed with exciting events around Charleston, but I had no trouble choosing what to do — the SEWE Fall Soiree is one of my favorite parties of the year. The event reads like a lot of Charleston gigs: Bus Shed! Oysters! Shag band! But it's usually one of the first events that feels genuinely fall-y. The Bus Shed was packed with a nice mix of young folks (most likely there for the fast-flowing open bar) and boomers in their Ducks Unlimited gear who knew how to party — and shag. After sampling some steaming oysters, chili, and several varieties of spirits from the bar, I joined the folks on the dance floor and practiced my shag moves. The soiree was plenty fun, but not quite as good as the previous year. I would have traded some of that new mood lighting for last year's wild game treats and mac 'n' cheese any day. Also, this year's band failed to inspire the kind of dancing The Men of Distinction did last year. But no biggie. Bring on the oyster roasts! —Erica Jackson
