Westminster Choir Concerts

When: Fri., June 1, 5 p.m. and Fri., June 8, 5 p.m. 2012

They're a sure bet. The Princeton N.J.-based Westminster Choir has been Spoleto's choir-in-residence for decades now, and with good reason. Considered one of the world's premier choirs, they always deliver a diverse program, technical brilliance, and even a few staging surprises. This year's program is built around the theme of memory and how sound is tied to it.

Homer Simpson's odyssey. The quirkiest selection in this year's program has to be "Five Romantic Miniatures from The Simpsons," a series of songs by composer Paul Crabtree that sets scripts from the long-running TV show to music — to surprisingly dramatic effect, according to conductor Joe Miller. "If you take those words out of the comedy of what's happening, what is actually being said is a profound statement of loving someone," Miller says.

Dolly Parton, y'all. The show also includes several Russian and Eastern European spiritual songs and some pieces written by choir students, but the whole evening is built around country music legend Dolly Parton's 1977 song "Light of a Clear Blue Morning." Get ready for a stunning solo performance with backing vocals meant to simulate the sound of a Smoky Mountain sunrise.
