What kind of coffee shop doesn't let its customers drink coffee and work on a laptop, undisturbed?
Recently, I visited a particular coffee shop on east bay around 3:30 in the afternoon and bought a $4 latte, only to be asked to leave at 4:00pm because I was working on my computer. Apparently, this place converts itself into a "trendy lounge" at precisely 4pm, and "the owners don't want their bar patrons to see laptops during happy hour".
Imagine my surprise and irritation at such a request, after paying f'in $4 for a latte and discovering that there was no wireless internet (yet another faux pas for java joints!) The manager made no apologies and even suggested that I sit outside on the street if I would like to continue working. Really? You want me to just plant myself on the curb with my laptop? I almost dumped by hot latte on the guy's head.
As a doctoral student, I find myself working in coffee shops frequently, so it's great to know where new places are cropping up and where old favorites are flourishing. Most local coffee shops work hard to establish friendly relationships with local professionals, but this place is apparently having an identity crisis. Decide what you are, assholes: a coffee shop or a bar. And if you decide you're a bar, good luck. There are hundreds of better bars in charleston.
