Tax Free Weekend coming right up

Shoppers, get ready. Starting Fri., Aug. 7, South Carolina will be hosting its sixth annual tax free weekend. Lasting until midnight on Sunday, the sales tax holiday is a great way to save money on back-to-school essentials. Shoppers can save on clothes, accessories, footwear, school supplies, computers, and more, thanks to the tax free promotion. Last year shoppers reportedly saved $2.1 million.

If you're feeling generous, put that saved money to good use. This year the Salvation Army and East Cooper Community Outreach are partnering up with Mt. Pleasant Towne Center to host a school uniform and supply drive to help out local kids in need. Various donation drop-off bins will be set up in the management office and participating stores throughout the weekend, and up through Aug. 14.

If you're buying khakis for the kids, why not use the six percent you’ll be saving and buy an extra pair for a kid in need? New and gently used uniform items and school supplies are accepted and will be distributed at the Hootie’s Homegrown Roundup, Back 2 School Basics on Aug. 12.

To thank customers, Mt. Pleasant Towne Center will be providing tax deduction forms for donations and hosting a block party event from 5:30-8 p.m. on Sat., Aug. 8. The event is free and open to the public, and will feature face painters, inflatables, live music, and more. For a list of tax-exempt items, needed uniform items, and donation locations call (843) 216-9900.
