Charleston's most dapper male dressers have a new reason to head down to King Street. Designer Billy Reid was selected out of six finalists as the GQ/Council of Fashion Designers of America Best New Menswear Designer in America on Feb. 12. Reid also won the award in 2001.
Reid, a Louisiana native, has seven stores throughout the U.S., one of which is located in Charleston. Reid has contributed to Charleston Fashion Week with shows in the past, but he is not on the schedule for this year.
After 9/11, Reid moved to Alabama, where he started his Billy Reid label in 2004. “He now has seven stores selling clothes you could imagine William Faulkner wearing at his dapper peak, with bold shots of color mixed in at just the right moments,” GQ says. The award is accompanied by a $50,000 cash prize and the chance to create a limited edition Levi's collection for Bloomingdale's. Check out GQ's article here.
