Tease Dry Bar is blowing out King Street

Get Blown

Charleston's fashionable ladies have been buzzing for months about the arrival of a big-city-style blow-dry bar called Tease. Located at 430 King Street, the salon specializes in one thing and one thing only: blow-outs. Which basically just means washing, drying, and styling hair.

I stopped by on Friday afternoon to get a sneak peek. Light exposed brick walls and massive light fixtures gave the space a bright feel, even though the windows were still covered in paper to block out prying eyes. Several ladies were perched in white chairs in front of a long bar, and I was blasted with hot hair from their various hair dryers as I took my seat. Just like when I pony up to a traditional, booze-stocked bar, I grabbed a menu and perused my options.

There are six main styles to choose from priced at $35 each. There's the signature Tease ("smooth with a flirty bend at the end"), the Goddess ("soft bouncy curls with Southern style"), the Siren ("big, volume hair"), and the Free Spirit ("messy beach hair"). There are also various specialty styles and add-ons, like blow-outs for men and braids. I decided to go with the Sophisticate: "straight, sleek, and ready to hit the town."

My hairdresser whisked me to the back for a quick shampoo (they currently use L'Oreal products), then back to my chair, where she blasted and brushed away for the better part of an hour. She said blow-outs typically only take about 40 minutes, but my massive mane took just over an hour. The end result was indeed sleek and sophisticated, but I've produced the same effects with my straightener at home. That said, my fellow visitors who chose other styles walked away with bouncy, beautiful hair. I wish I'd chosen another 'do, especially because they next day my hair was back to its normal wavy self.

Tease Dry Bar is officially open as of Monday, so stop by if you need to get your hairs did for something special. They do accept walk-ins, so it's perfect for a gal-on-the-go who can spare an hour for a blow-out. Find out more about the shop at teasedrybar.com.
