You might know local design collective Distil Union
for its previous six Kickstarter successes — the Wally series of wallets and the Stanley stand. Maglock sunglasses, the firm’s latest creation, continues that trend. Launched this past Tuesday, the Kickstarter
is currently at over $24,000 pledged on a $15,000 goal with 46 days remaining.
Maglocks clip to your clothes or any magnetized surface
Basically, Maglocks are sunglasses with little magnets embedded in the frame. Those magnets let you clip the glasses closed onto your shirt so they don’t fall off. You can also attach the sunglasses to anything metal, and they’ll stick.
Founded in 2011 by Nate Justiss and Lindsay Windham; the collective’s design philosophy focuses on minimalism and simplification of everyday life.
Those principles played a major part in the design of Maglock — instead of carrying around accessories for accessories, the magnets are integrated into the glasses.
The original idea came about six years ago after Justiss lost an expensive pair of sunglasses at a football game. Annoyed, he affixed some magnets to a pair of old sunglasses as a solution. It worked, and Justiss still has those glasses today.
In addition to the magnets, the glasses feature polarized, scratch-resistant lenses with UVA and UVB protection. The company is currently offering two different designs in six colors paired with a folding sunglass case, and glasses are expected to be shipped to backers in December of 2017. But you should probably act quickly
if you want in on the first batch of Maglocks, since supplies are limited.
